The county is centrally located and is approximately one-half hour from both Portland, Maine’s largest city, and Augusta, Maine’s capital. The Maine Turnpike cuts directly through Androscoggin County, offering easy access to its major cities. Androscoggin County is home to the Maine State Parade, the Moxie Festival and the beautiful Great Falls Balloon Festival, a hot-air balloon spectacle that takes place each year in Lewiston and attracts local citizens and visitors alike. A community of festivals, Androscoggin County is home to the Maine State Parade, Liberty Festival, Moxie Festival and the Festival de Joie.
Androscoggin County is the hub of most major highways in the state. Interstate access to the area is provided via Exits 12 and 13 off the Maine Turnpike. The area is also served by an extraordinarily well-equipped general aviation airport in Auburn and by two of the state's major rail lines - Maine Intermodel Transportation and Guilford Railways. Maine Intermodel Transportation operates the new intermodel transportation facility in Auburn, making Auburn the largest freight port in Maine, with both direct service to Canada and connecting service to Chicago, Mexico, and Vancouver. Freight originating in Auburn ultimately ends up in the Far East. Plans are currently under way to develop passenger rail service to the Twin Cities, with an Amtrak connection to Boston and Montreal.
