Falmouth, Maine, is located just north of Portland on the coast of Maine. It has a population of approximately 11,000 people, and covers approximately 32 square miles from the coastline to rural areas further inland. It is a vibrant, independent community that provides most services to citizens itself; cooperative agreements with regional agencies and neighboring communities help to round out a full program of services. Falmouth was first settled in the 1600's and received its first recognition as a Town in 1658. It received its name in honor of a small village at the mouth of the Fal River in Cornwall, England, from which some of the earliest settlers came.
The original boundaries of the town extended all the way from the Spurwink River in Scarborough up the coast to a point opposite Clapboard Island. This covered most of what is now Westbrook, Cape Elizabeth, South Portland, Portland and Falmouth. Cape Elizabeth and South Portland broke away in 1765, Portland in 1785, and Westbrook in 1814, leaving Falmouth the size it is today. Mackworth is an island of approximately 100 acres, connected to Falmouth by a causeway at the mouth of the Presumpscot River. This proximity to Portland and the Presumpscot accounts for the unique blend of human and natural history that has shaped the Island.
In 1946, Governor Percival Proctor Baxter donated Mackworth Island to the State of Maine to be used for state public purposes and as a sanctuary for wild beasts and birds. The 1¼ mile trail that encircles the island takes about an hour to complete at a leisurely pace and visitors are treated to stunning views of Casco Bay and Portland. The Governor Baxter School for the Deaf is located on the island and is not open to the public without prior arrangement. | Demographic Statistics | | Falmouth | | National Avg | | | | | | | | Rainfall (inches) | | 42.8 | | 36.6 | | Snowfall (inches) | | 67.8 | | 25.2 | | Precipitation Days | | 123 | | 101 | | Sunny Days | | 200 | | 205 | | Comfort Index | | 55 | | 44 | | Elevation (feet) | | 163 | | 1,062 | | Air Quality | | 18 | | 48 | | Water Quality | | 70 | | 55 | | Sales Tax | | 5% | | 6% | | Property Tax Rate (per $1,000) | | 14.60 | | 13.28 | | Commute Time (minutes) | | 22.9 | | 27.4 | | Cost of Living | | 123% | | 100 |
