Old Orchard Beach, with its beach, pier, and amusement park rides has an allure unlike any other in Maine, attracting thousands of visitors, many from French-speaking Québec. The area is well known for it nearly seven miles of magnificent beach. Its relatively low surf and fine sand make it a perfect summertime destination.
Old Orchard, although primarily a summer community, offers many opportunities for oceanfront living, especially if you are considering a condo or townhome. Many units, whether recent construction or resale, provide for dramatic ocean views or easy waterfront access. Single family homes, directly on the water, can be found in the Orchard Park area. A few miles south of Old Orchard Beach, the Saco River divides Saco from Biddeford. On the Biddeford side is Maine's largest lagoon, Biddeford Pool, a one-mile-wide tidal basin formed by two spits of land connecting to an island. Along these spits of land are the beautiful sandy beaches of the Biddeford Pool area, including Hills Beach on the northern side, and Biddeford Pool, Fortune Rocks and Granite Point on the southern side, known as Fletcher's Neck. The beaches along the outer shores of Biddeford Pool are rocky, but the two barriers are made up of long stretches of fine sandy beach. With their robust Franco-American heritage, the twin cities of Biddeford and Saco constitute the industrial and population centers of York County.
Camp Ellis, which is part of Saco, is a unique enclave of single family homes along the Atlantic Ocean and Saco River. The beach at Camp Ellis is small and private and many homeowners rent their properties during the desirable summer months. Fishing off the rocky jetty is a popular activity. Inland, Sanford is one of the state's fastest-growing communities, and the Berwicks and the Eliots are residential, riverside communities that house many who work at the shipyard and in New Hampshire. |
