Incorporated in 1805, Oxford County is located on the Western edge of Maine and borders New Hampshire. South Paris is the County seat. The towns of this region are mostly small and rural. This mountain region provides both summer and winter recreation opportunities and boasts some of the state´s best skiing, miles of hiking and snowmobile trails. The Appalachian Trail, Grafton Notch State Park, and numerous lakes and rivers are part of this outdoor enthusiast´s paradise.
Each February, there is a Mushers Bowl Winter Carnival, with sled dog races, skating, and a winter carnival dance. In 2002, the per capita personal income in Oxford County was $22,999. This was an increase of 22.9% from 1997. The 2002 figure was 74% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906.
