Maine's largest and most diverse school district dedicates itself to assuring that all students are learning for their future. The Portland Public Schools educates 7,500 students in kindergarten through 12th grade and about 6,000 adult learners. Facilities range from a one-room schoolhouse on an island in Casco Bay to the nation's second-oldest public high school and a state-of-the-art elementary school now under construction on the downtown peninsula.

Maine Continuing Education
 Located in Orono, the University of Maine offers a strong traditional education at an affordable price. Founded in 1865, the university offers 88 bachelor's degree programs, 64 master's degree programs, and 25 doctoral programs. Since 1923 graduate work has been a separate division of the University. Today the master's degree is offered in over 60 areas of study and the doctorate in 26 areas. The University of Southern Maine is the largest of the seven campuses of the University of Maine System, as well as one of the oldest, with its founding in Gorham in 1878. USM is a major educational force in the overall growth and improvement of the economic, civic, social, and cultural fabric of southern Maine. From its campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston, USM offers baccalaureate, master's, and Ph.D. degree programs, providing students with rich learning opportunities in the arts, humanities, politics, health sciences, business, mass communications, science, engineering, and technology.
