Incorporated in 1854, Sagadahoc County is located in what is known as the mid-coast region of Maine. The name Sagadahoc is derived from the Sasanoa Indian word meaning "mouth of big river." Bath is the County´s only city and home to the shipbuilding company Bath Iron Works, Maine´s largest employer.
Sagadahoc County is a popular county for visitors to Maine because of its coastline, antique shops and other attractions. It also is home to the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath, an outstanding resource for appreciating Maine´s marine heritage. Maine visitors as well as citizens enjoy the coast of Sagadahoc County at places such as Popham Beach State Park. In 2002, the per capita personal income in Sagadahoc County was $27,955. This was an increase of 22.4% from 1997. The 2002 figure was 90% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906.
