Scarborough is conveniently located in southern Maine, approximately 7 miles south of the City of Portland. It is just a short drive to Portland and the Maine Mall with easy access to the Maine Turnpike, Portland Jetport and now passenger rail service to Boston and points south. Scarborough is a diverse community with a commitment to the quality of life and the environment. Scarborough offers lovely sandy beaches and the rocky coastline made famous by a local artist, Winslow Homer. The largest saltwater marsh in Maine is located within the city's boundaries along with Rachel Carson Wildlife lands.
The Great Salt Marsh, Maine's largest tidal marsh, is also with the boundaries of Scarborough. It encompasses approximately 3,100 acres and is a natural habitat of many species of marine life. The Marsh is protected at the local, state and federal levels and can be enjoyed by all. During the warmer months The Maine Audubon operates the Scarborough Marsh Nature Center located on the Pine Point Road. Coastal Neighborhoods and Real EstateScarborough is well known for its beaches and coastal communities. Prouts Neck includes Ferry Beach a higher-income, year-round and second home community. It is a fairly secluded with considerable privacy. The BlackPoint Inn, and the Prouts Neck Country Club are located there. Pine Point includes Pillsbury Shores and the East Grand Beach Business District. At one time Pine Point Beach was primarily a summer commintiy, but in recent years have evolved into a year round waterfront community. Addtionally, most of the East Grand Avenue Business District has been converted to residential use. The segment of rocky coastline that separates sandy Scarborough Beach from Higgins Beach is known as the Graveyard due to its turbulent shoals. This area consists of primarily of exclusive seaside homes. Alternatively, Higgins Beach extends to the northeast beyond the Graveyard to the Spurwink River and is intensively developed with small lots and cottages.
