Scarborough's school system is housed in modern facilities at strategic locations throughout the community. Its educational programs are student centered with choice being an essential part of the school system's philosophy. At the primary, intermediate and middle school phases, children and parents have a choice of either graded or three-year multi-age educational programs. Scarborough High School offers a diverse curriculum with a range of options including advanced placement courses and state of the art vocational education at two regional vocational/technical schools.
In November 2011, a referendum was approved to build a new Wentworth Intermediate School. Construction began in the summer of 2012.
The Scarborough school system's commitment to the visual and performing arts is as impressive as its athletic programs. Student programs include choral and band in grades five through twelve, a wide range of visual art opportunities culminating with a week long art show for the public in the spring of each year and several theater productions at the high school.
Academic success includes 90% of the seniors going on to post secondary education, a designation by the Portland Press Herald that Scarborough High School is one of the top twenty high schools in the state as measured by its performance on the Maine Educational Assessment, and numerous Academic Decathlon and speech and debate state championships.
The Scarborough school district consists of 6 schools and includes approximately 220 teachers with a student to teacher ratio of 13.2 to 1. The National Enrollment Ranking is in the 76 percentile.

Many Scarborough students interested in private school attend local area institutions such Wayneflete, or North Yarmouth Academy. Enrollment in private education is 10.9% within the district.

University of Maine
Located in Orono, the University of Maine offers a strong traditional education at an affordable price.
Founded in 1865, the university offers 88 bachelor's degree programs, 64 master's degree programs, and 25 doctoral programs. Since 1923 graduate work has been a separate division of the University. Today the master's degree is offered in over 60 areas of study and the doctorate in 26 areas.
The University of Southern Maine is the largest of the seven campuses of the University of Maine System, as well as one of the oldest, with its founding in Gorham in 1878. USM is a major educational force in the overall growth and improvement of the economic, civic, social, and cultural fabric of southern Maine.
From its campuses in Portland, Gorham, and Lewiston, USM offers baccalaureate, master's, and Ph.D. degree programs, providing students with rich learning opportunities in the arts, humanities, politics, health sciences, business, mass communications, science, engineering, and technology.
