Somerset County, incorporated in 1809, is centrally located in Maine, bordering Kennebec County at its southern tip and Canada at its Northern tip, which is approximately 90 minutes from the Canadian city of Quebec. The confluence of the Dead River and the Kennebec River in a town called The Forks is a popular spot for whitewater rafting. In 2002, the per capita personal income in Somerset County was $22,933. This was an increase of 29.1% from 1997. The 2002 figure was 74% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906. Local area festivals include: The Arts & Air Fest in May, the Fall Fesitival in September, Harvest Days in August and the Skowhegan State Fair in August.
