Incorporated in 1827, Waldo County sits in what is commonly called mid-coast Maine along Penobscot Bay. The County is known for both its coastal views as well as its mountain vistas. Belfast is the county seat of Waldo County. In addition to the extensive coastline of Waldo County, the interior of the County is dotted with lakes, ponds, forests and mountains for outdoor enthusiasts to enjoy.
The county was named for Samuel Waldo, land speculator who attracted many settlers to Maine. Waldo County is also a business center of Maine and is home to the credit card processing company MBNA, which employs over 1,500 people in Belfast, Maine. In 2002, the per capita personal income in Waldo County was $23,775. This was an increase of 30.5% from 1997. The 2002 figure was 77% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906. Area festivals include The Arts in the Park in July and The Maine Celtic Celebration also in July. Belfast, the areas largest population center, has been the location for three major films - Peyton Place in 1957, Thinner in 1996 and In the Bedroom in 2001.
