Harpswell consists of a mainland peninsula and three major islands connected by bridges, along with an additional 47 offshore islands. This results in Harpswell having over 216 miles of water frontage, more frontage than any town in Maine. Harpswell properties are often available with water frontage, water views, and/or water rights. Real estate prices can vary considerably, depending upon proximity to the ocean.
Strong Connection to the Ocean The Harpswells' strong fishing heritage, coupled with its quiet, coastal village atmosphere provides a retirement and vacation appeal for those who enjoy the rural Maine coast. Connected to the mainland by a unique honeycombed bridge, the islands are popular stops on vacation visits. The islands are home to several thousand residents, which support thriving tuna and cod fishing industries. Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Pearl of Orr's Island, lived here. Cundy’s Harbor has but a couple hundred residents, many of them working lobstermen who sail out from the harbor at dawn’s first light. While quiet and seemingly remote, it is only a twenty minute drive to historic Bath or to the college town of Brunswick. Additionally, the harbor provides convenient access to all of Harpswell.
Historic Area The township consists of a western peninsula with Harpswell Center south of Brunswick, as well as a collection of islands and villages, including Great Island with Cundy’s Harbor, Orr’s Island, and Bailey Island, all interconnected with bridges. In total, Harpswell encompasses several settlements and over a hundred miles of coastline in a small geographic area. The are also features several B&Bs and inns, some in wonderful historic homes.
