The county name is derived from the home of Governor Thomas Pownal of Massachusetts, who was born in Lincoln, England. Commercial fishing, lobstering, boat building and other coastal activities account for a part of Lincoln´s economic base.
The county includes many small, picturesque coastal communities that are popular summer destinations, such as Wiscasset, the county seat, and Boothbay Harbor.
In 2002, the per capita personal income in Lincoln County was $29,420. This was an increase of 23.1% from 1997. The 2002 figure was 95% of the national per capita income, which was $30,906.
